インテルは2012年4月23日、第3世代インテルCoreプロセッサーファミリーを発表した。
コード名Ivy Bridgeこと、22nmプロセスで製造される新プロセッサー。

インテルのTick、Tock戦略で、プロセステクノロジーが変更となるTickとなる。
マイクロアーキテクチャーは全世代と同じSandy Bridgeだが、細かい改良があり、特にGPU関連での改良が大きい。
メモリ周りではLow VoltageのDDR3メモリDDR3Lに対応。PCI Express 3.0、CPUに統合されるGPUはDX11に対応。

CPUだけで前世代と比較すると、改良効果はあまりないが、GPUを使用する3D系のベンチマークでは最大2倍、平均的にもおおよそ1.5倍程度の改良がみられる。
ゲーム、ビデオの編集やコンバートなどメディア系の機能を使用するなら、

これに対応する7シリーズチップセットは、コード名Panther Pointで、Rapid Storage Technology 11、USB 3.0への対応、3つのディスプレイに対応、Thunderboltへの対応など。

モバイル関連の新商品は
Core i7-3920XM、Core i7-3820QM、Core i7-3720QM、Core i7-3615QM、Core i7-3612QM、Core i7-3610QM
ですべて新しいGPUのHD4000に対応。
