マイクロソフトは2012年7月9日、トロントで開催中のWorldwide Partner Conferenceにおいて、8月第一週にWindows 8のRelease to Manufacturing(RTM)に入り、一般向けの販売は10月下旬となることを発表した。
Windowsにおいて、RTMは製造段階に入るということで、OSのインストール用DVDなどの製造プロセスに入ることになり、OSとしては完成したことになる。一部パートナーには8月上旬から導入できるようにもなる。
一般向けへの提供は10月下旬となる。
