日本ではUQが、アメリカではClearがモバイルWiMAXサービスを提供している。
2009年からサービスが始まったWiMAXも日本では大都市を中心にエリアが広がっている。アメリカでは、大都市優先ではないようだが、サービスエリアは拡大しているようだ。
毎年1月にラスベガスで行われるCESというイベントは巨大で、世界中から人が集まる。
このラスベガスでサービスを提供すれば広告になるためか、Clearはホテル内も含めてサービスエリアを強化したようだ。
行く前にわかっていたことは、まだ国際ローミングが始まっていないという点。年内に何とかというレベルのようだが、CESに間に合わなかったのは痛い。
ローミングは出来ないが、こちらで新規契約することは出来るだろうと言うことで、電波を探してみた。
WiMAXモジュール内蔵のPCで状況を確認する限り、電波は届いていない。場所が悪いのかと思って調べるが電波が見つからない。
個人的にはまだだが、すでに使えている方はいて、ホテル内でも完璧。さらに30日間お試しで無料だと聞いたので、早速本気で探してみた。
再起動して、場所を変えてとやっていると、やっと見つかった。
接続は日本でUQのサービスを使うのと同じように、簡単な登録のみで完了する。
このあたりの簡便さがWiMAXの魅力である。
速度も、ホテルのネット接続サービスを使うよりも速く、CESのプレスルームで使うネットと同程度の速度が出ている。
ここまで利便性の高いサービスならWiMAXの世界展開が楽しみになってくる。UQ in Japan, and in the U.S. Clear has been providing mobile WiMAX service.
